You can sponsor a pastor

Dear Friends of South Sudan,

The present generation of South Sudanese grassroots leadership is poignantly aware that they suffer from nearly twenty years of having been denied education and access to resources because of war. That’s why developing community leadership talent is one of SSFI’s highest priorities. Last fall Calvary Ministries Bible College in Kenya offered to train five Sudanese pastors. Word of this opportunity “wowed” the Sudanese refugee community in Kenya. They felt so forgotten. SSFI selected five men from Kakuma Refugee Camp to receive the training. The Bible College program for one year consists of four quarters. Each quarter consists of 1 month intensive classroom study, 1 month hands-on training (working with a pastor), and 1 month off. Students are housed in a dormitory; meals are served in the dining hall. You can learn more about Calvary Ministries Bible College by visiting their website. The tuition is very low. With scholarships and support from churches and individuals in the US, the cost per student is only $100.00 per year. Obviously, the true cost is much more.

I thought you would want to know about this opportunity to sponsor one or more of the Sudanese men. After they finish school, some will return to the refugee community and some will go back to South Sudan -- all as solid leaders of local churches. And even if you can’t manage to give $100.00, please know that any amount you can give will help. The Sudanese students arrived at the Bible College with almost nothing. The clothing they have is only what they are wearing. They have no bed sheets or other personal effects. The School has used the money earmarked for food to buy the necessary things for them. Please send a check today. Thank you so much for your faithfulness in helping the people of South Sudan.

Sincerely,
Julia Duany

Additional information about the pastor training program:

Pastor Gene Throop, President of Calvary Ministries Outreach, International, has informed us that all of the student pastors arrived by February 6, 2001. Pastor Throop writes, "We have purchased clothing, personal items, bedding, etc. for them as they arrived with only the clothes on their back. We will also need to give them travel money to get home when the session ends. We consider it an HONOR to be blessed with having them, but the expense has been great as you can imagine."
