U.S.
Lobbying Campaign Keeps Sudan
off the U.N. Security Council
October 13, 2000
Dear Friends of Southern Sudan,
On Wednesday, 10/11/2000, the United Nations voted to deny Sudan a seat on the
Security Council, selecting Mauritius instead. Sudan has been a candidate for a
two-year term in one of the non-permanent seats in the United Nations Security
Council. For the past month, roughly, the United States has been lobbying to
keep the Government of Sudan off the Council, on the grounds that it is a
sponsor of terrorism, has a terrible human rights record, has bombed U.N. relief
sites in southern Sudan, and is under U.N. diplomatic sanctions. Sudan, which
was endorsed for the Security Council seat by the Organization of African Unity
in July, has accused the U.S. of meddling in African affairs. Links to wire
service stories about this are available on SSFI's web site at http://southsudanfriends.org/news.html#securitycouncil
