Phillips Middle School
Souper Bowl

Julia Duany received this wonderful message of support from teacher Randy Kunsch and the 7th grade of Phillips Middle School of Phillips, Wisconsin, USA, dated March 30, 2000:

Subject: Our Thoughts Are With You

Mrs. Duany,

I believe that you often say that some of God's greatest miracles are disguised. Well, I think that I have an example of that:

Thanks to your interest in promoting peace in Sudan, my students not only increased their knowledge of Sudan and the situation in Sudan; but they have decided to sponsor a "Souper Bowl" for a community service project. All 7th grade students will make a pottery soup bowl in art class (hopefully decorated in some African art design), they will then find a community member to purchase their bowl and eat a dinner of soup with them. During this dinner the students will make a presentation to the community members about the nation of Sudan. Following the dinner, all the money raised will be donated to a humanitarian cause in Sudan. In addition all the students have started a letter writing campaign to government officials in the United States asking them to promote peace in Sudan. Granted that we are a small rural community but as always compassion and hopefully peace begin with one step at a time.

Finally, we (the 7th grade of Phillips Middle School) want to wish you and your family a great weekend in Indianapolis. Please let your son, Duany Duany, that we will be watching and cheering for him and the entire Wisconsin Badger team.

GO BIG RED

Here is a follow-up from Randy Kunsch, dated May 4, 2000:

Today, May 4, was "Souper Bowl Day" at Phillips Middle School in Phillips, WI. To refresh your memory, each seventh grade student made a bowl in art  class. After completing our unit of study on Sudan, the students each  invited a community member to come to lunch at school. By paying $5 the  guest would come to school and have lunch with the person who invited  them. During lunch the students had a short presentation about Sudan and  what they had learned during their studies. At the conclusion of lunch the  invited guests were given the bowl to keep as a souvenir of their  commitment to helping the people of Sudan.

Well, I am happy to inform you that today the seventh grade made  approximately $400 and in the near future we will be making our specific  donation to the people of Sudan. Wow, what a difference your efforts have  made! I hope that I can put this into perspective for you. Phillips is a  rural community of 1,500 people in northern Wisconsin (we are located  nearly 300 miles northwest of Milwaukee). The seventh grade consists of 84  students. Today, during "Souper Day," we had the local newspaper here to  cover the story (published once weekly) and the only television station in  our area (75 miles away) was here. The Governor of Wisconsin was in  Washington D.C. for meetings, but sent his northern Wisconsin  representative to congratulate the students and thank them for their  efforts.

Julia, this could well be another one of God's miracles in  disguise - if your efforts got this type of response in a location like  Phillips, WI, your efforts worldwide can have the same results. Never doubt that what you are doing is worthwhile or never doubt that you  will succeed and bring peace to Sudan and comfort to its people.

Thank you,

Randy Kunsch
