Sudan rebels say govt bombs border town, kills seven
NAIROBI, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Sudan's main rebel group said a
lone
government plane this week bombed a town near the Kenyan
border where aid
agencies are based, killing seven people.
A Sudan People's
Liberation Army
(SPLA) statement issued late on Friday said a
government
Antonov plane bombed Narus town in
Kapoeta County, close to Kenya's northern
border.
"The Antonov flew over the civilian settlement for over 30
minutes before
dropping 15 bombs in the centre of the town
killing five people on the spot
and wounding seven others
seriously," the statement said.
Two of the wounded later succumbed to their wounds. There
were many other
people with light injuries, it said.
The SPLA said it has no military presence in the area but it
listed aid
agencies it said operated from there, including the
Sudan Medical Care and
the New Sudan Council of Churches which
were carrying out health and water
programmes respectively.
There was no independent confirmation of the SPLA report,
which follows
similar previous accusations against the
government.
The SPLA said that since January Khartoum had carried out
115 bombing
raids on civilian and humanitarian targets in south
Sudan.
The SPLA has been fighting for autonomy for the mainly
Christian and
animist south Sudan since 1983 in a conflict that
has killed more than two
million people.
